“I was certified as a lifeguard at the Fanwood-Scotch Plains Y and have been working here for over a year. I grew up in Scotch Plains and took swim lessons here when I was younger. I also participated in the after care program and vacation fun days. When I first got certified, I wanted to work at one of the outdoor pools over the summer. Then I decided that I wanted to work as a lifeguard year round. The hours are good, it’s close to my house and being a lifeguard here pays well.

For water safety, one tip is for adults to always keep an eye on their kids. People can overestimate their children’s swimming ability and think they’ll be fine without being watched. It’s also important for adults to not be distracted when watching them.”
