At the Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA we give you the knowledge, inspiration and support to achieve your personal health and well-being goals. Throughout the year, we offer educational lunch and learns, health screenings, cooking demonstrations, workshops and resources to help you achieve your best self in spirit, mind and body.

Lunch and Learn

Each month we will meet at the FSPY from 12:15-1:15pm to lunch and learn. Our focus is on health, wellness and new developments in technology, finance or alternative therapies. Please bring your own lunch and we provide beverages and dessert.

WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 8: GOAL SETTING & THE Y
Come discuss with our own Sheri Cognetti and Donna Peart the best Y programs for you. Then, make a plan to follow through. We will help you be accountable to your goals. Make the most out of your Y membership!

WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 12: HEART HEALTH
With Claudia Irmiere: Back by popular demand, Claudia, of St. Barnabas, will discuss the latest strategies for keeping our hearts in the best shape possible for Heart Health Month.

TUESDAY, MARCH 24 – DIABETES ALERT DAY
This is a one-day wake up call to increase awareness of the seriousness of diabetes, especially when it is undiagnosed. We will have screenings and educational information in our lobby and a cooking demonstration in our board room at 12:15pm with our registered dietitian Donna Peart.

WEDNESDAY, APRIL 15 – VITAL INFO FOR SENIORS
Seniors that wish to stay home may need help from outside sources for support. This talk will focus on three main concerns: In-home care information from Lois Shanker of Right at Home; house call information from Donna Occhipinti of the Visiting Physician Service, and information on personal financial assistance for seniors provided by Hedy Knapp of Knapp Paperwork Partners.

Check up on Your Health

We partner with Overlook Medical Center, part of Atlantic Health System, on a number of programs. Each month throughout the year, the Community Health Department of Atlantic Health visits our Y to offer health information and screenings for our members.

MD on Call

We are excited to be working with Overlook Family Practice to provide the community with the MD on Call program. Second and third year Family Medicine Residents from the Overlook Medical Center will be available in our lobby to conduct health screenings and answer medical questions. These residents are undergoing training in all aspects of Primary Care. Blood pressure screenings will be available at every session and the residents can answer a variety of questions. Concerns about diabetes? Need suggestions on how to quit smoking? Bring your medical questions to our Y for information and advice*.
