June is National Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month. Worldwide, more than 55 million people are living with Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia. Did you know that studies have shown that physical activity reduces the risk of cognitive decline? At the Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA we promote the importance of physical activity at any age! Just a little bit of activity can go a long way in helping improve brain health. Check out some of our great offerings below, which can be used as a great start on your health and wellness journey:

Enhance® Fitness – Embracing life with Arthritis

Enhance® Fitness is an evidence-based physical activity program. Classes are designed to safely increase participants’ fitness levels through aerobic and strength training. Enhance Fitness has been proven to increase participants’ strength, balance, flexibility, general activity level and independence when they attend on a regular basis.

Chair Yoga

A blend of movements done both seated and standing using the chair for stability. The exercises are for all levels of fitness but would mostly benefit those with limited mobility and/or balance issues.

LaBlast® Fitness

This is a partner-free dance fitness workout created by world-renowned dancer and fitness expert Louis van Amstel (as seen an ABC’s Dancing with the Stars.) It’s accessible for all levels – from the absolute beginner to the experienced dancer. Experience the full array of dance styles from Jive to Foxtrot and Viennese Waltz to Lindy Hop.

Step

Moderate step class designed for all exercisers. Interval class incorporates cardio, strength, and flexibility using steps and hand weights. Good for adults of all ages and pre-postnatal moms.

Strength Train Together

Blast all your muscles with a high-rep weight training workout. Using an adjustable barbell, weight plates and body weight, this workout combines squats, lunges, presses and curl, with functional integrated exercises. Dynamic music and a motivating group atmosphere will get your heart rate up, make you sweat and push you to a personal best.
