This week, we’re celebrating National Volunteer Week and featuring two of our teacher’s assistants, Meagan and Katie, who started as volunteers.

Katie started volunteering at the Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA in November and Meagan followed in January. Both are high school seniors enrolled in a child development class at Union County Vocational-Technical High School; they were volunteering as part of an internship toward their Child Development Associate certificate and recently joined our staff team. Both Katie and Meagan hope to be teachers; Meagan, who works in our 4s classroom, is leaning toward elementary education and Katie, who works with our Kindergarten students, hopes to stay at that grade level.

Katie says: “I enjoy being so involved in the classroom and getting to know the kids. I like seeing how they interact with each other and with us. I like that I get to be so involved in the classroom at such a young age. It’s a privilege and it’s teaching me so much.”

Adds Meagan: “It’s great that this led to a job. I’m looking forward to working over the summer and coming back over college breaks.”
