When Amy enrolled her children in swim lessons at the Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA last summer, she was signing up for more than a fun activity for her kids. She was investing in an essential life skill.
However, things didn’t go as planned when her 5-year-old daughter, Heidi, arrived for the first lesson. A previous experience at another swim school had shaken Heidi’s trust. She was anxious and didn’t want to get into the pool. Each week, Amy would prepare Heidi days before her lesson. She began to dread lesson day because Heidi never wanted to go.
That’s when the FSPY Aquatics team stepped in.
Heidi’s instructor, Eugenia, and the pool deck supervisor, Lauren, reassured Amy: If you trust us, we can help her. And, Amy did.
Having grown up attending a local YMCA, Amy knew about the Y’s long history with swim lessons. “I should have started here,” she said in retrospect. “It works. They’ve been doing it for 100 years.”
Over the next few weeks, Eugenia and Lauren worked together. They gently encouraged Heidi at her own pace, acknowledging her feelings while building her confidence.
Then, one day Heidi got into the pool at the start of class and stayed for the entire lesson. “She came out absolutely beaming with pride,” Amy shared. “It was incredible to watch.”
Heidi’s growing confidence in the pool is giving Amy something priceless: peace of mind. “This isn’t an extra-curricular activity for my kids,” Amy said. “It is absolutely essential.”
Whether at a neighborhood pool or visiting the beach on vacation, water safety is a life skill. At the Y, students of all ages learn the skills to be safe in and around water and progress at their own pace, building both essential skills and confidence.
More Than Lessons. A Place to Belong.
Beyond the swim lessons milestones, Amy values what she calls “the Y’s full package experience.”
It’s being greeted by name at the Welcome Center every time they come in
It’s the friendly faces of the staff she sees consistently each week
It’s spending Saturday mornings at the Y as a family — gymnastics for Heidi, swim lessons for her younger brother — and conversations with other parents who have now become close friends.
What began as swim lessons has become community. What started as fear has grown into confidence. What felt overwhelming became joyful.
