Tracey’s journey with the Y began in 2021—but her relationship with water started much earlier.

As a teenager, she jumped into a pool believing she could keep herself afloat. Instead, she found herself in distress and had to be rescued. That moment stayed with her for years.

After that experience, Tracey avoided pools, lakes, and oceans altogether.

Over time, she realized something important: she didn’t want fear to hold her back. She wanted to travel, take vacations, and fully enjoy experiences near the water—with confidence.

So, she made a commitment to herself.

Tracey decided she would not go on vacation until she learned how to swim.

Since starting swim lessons at the Y, she has been steadily working toward that goal. While she hasn’t set a specific timeline, she celebrates the progress she’s making along the way—gaining confidence with each lesson and building skills step by step.

At first, even simple milestones felt big. Putting her face in the water was a major breakthrough.

With the support of Y instructors, Tracey has been able to move at her own pace, trying something new each week. “The instructors have helped me take it one step at a time,” she shares.

Tracey’s advice for other adults considering swim lessons?

“Be patient and kind to yourself. Listen to the instructors. Take the time you need to put it all together. I’m still working on it.”

Her goal is still ahead of her, but it is getting closer.

One day, Tracey hopes to be somewhere in the Caribbean, enjoying the beauty of warm, open water—not with fear, but with confidence.

Why This Story Matters

Tracey’s journey is a powerful reminder that it’s never too late to learn a life-saving skill—and that confidence in the water can open doors to new experiences, health, and well-being.

During Water Safety Month, we recognize that access to swim lessons is essential. At the Y, we are committed to ensuring that everyone—regardless of financial circumstances—has the opportunity to learn to swim and feel safe in and around the water.

Through our annual fundraising campaign and financial assistance, we help remove barriers so more individuals can begin their own journey—whether they’re overcoming fear, building confidence, or learning a skill that can save a life.
