“I started working here again in July 2019, but I was also here back in the 80s. I was a lifeguard, I worked at the front desk and was also a camp counselor when it was Camp Makawakmo. I worked here when I was in college and when I first got into teaching. In 2019, I retired from teaching. I drove by the Y one day and saw a help wanted sign and said this is what I wanted to do. Being active and staying healthy has always been important to me – when not here, I also used to run community dances – and that was a big reason why I wanted to come back. When I was originally here, I also thoroughly enjoyed the whole atmosphere and working with the public. I wanted to come back to that and when I returned, it was a similar feeling. There’s still that sense of community. When we were closed, I missed being able to come here to work out and just being in a great environment. Now that we’re back, I’m looking forward to getting back to ‘normal.’ It’s been a great transition for me going from teaching and being able to use some of those skills here. I really like socializing and being around people.”
