“I came back to work at the Fanwood-Scotch Plains Y in early March. I had previously worked here during the 2017-2018 school year as a lifeguard and swim instructor. I was on the Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School Swim Team and had practices here. It was easy to come to work. I would go from Swim Team to lifeguarding; instead of changing into my regular clothes after practice, I’d get ready for work. I worked here my entire senior year of high school. Then, in the fall of 2018, I went away to school. When everything started to shut down because of COVID, I came back home. My supervisor at the Y reached out to me about coming back and working as a health screener. With my current school schedule, I don’t have class on Tuesdays and Fridays and I can come in for a few hours each day. I always enjoyed working with the people here, the staff and the members. People are very friendly here. Especially now, it’s nice since I don’t go out as often. Coming to work is something I look forward to; I can’t sit around all day just staring at a screen all the time. Here, I get to talk to people and interact with them, even if it’s just a quick ‘hi, how are you?’ It’s a different change of pace and it makes me feel a little bit better. It’s been a little over a year now since school has been online and it’s a nice change to be back out in the world.”
