After a medical issue forced me into early retirement, I struggled with isolation and purpose. Multiple joint surgeries and the pandemic only added to the challenge. Following knee surgery in 2023, I joined the Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA—and everything changed.

Ann in the Wellness Center created a full-body workout plan, and thanks to her encouragement (I can still hear her saying “sit up straight!”), I’ve built strength, confidence, and balance. I now do EGYM circuits three times a week and take part in fitness classes and fun events—from painting to potlucks. Volunteering with the preschoolers has been a highlight—they call me “Miss Carol” and line up for my secret handshakes! I feel connected, strong, and joyful. I donated to the Y just months after joining, and increased my gift this year—because I’ve seen the impact of programs like LiveSTRONG, summer camp scholarships, and membership assistance. This place doesn’t just support fitness—it builds community. I’m living proof.”
