“I have been enjoying membership at the Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA for about 41 years. I joined to participate in activities that promote physical, emotional and mental health and to become acquainted with members of the community. My children participated in activities at the Y – swimming lessons, special activities and classes. My son worked in the fitness center for a while as a young adult and when my husband traveled each month for work, the Y became an important outlet for me. When I was teaching, I went to classes in the evening. Now that I am retired and also helping my mom and watching my three grandchildren, when the Y is open I try to make two to three morning classes when I can and go daily to exercise. My favorite thing about the Y is the people; the hard working staff and the friendships I have developed over the years. They have been an important source of support, learning and physical fitness for me. I miss the staff and the members, being able to work out together, share news, support each other, celebrate good times together and share and work through all of life’s ups and downs. While the Y is closed, I really appreciate the Facebook Live and Zoom classes. I have been able to keep my routine of starting each day with Y classes. I also appreciate the YouTube sessions that I can turn on and do at any time to keep moving and de-stress. I stayed with the Y during this time because I am really impressed with how the staff has been working to provide us with opportunities to take care of our bodies and minds during this stressful time. I am sure it has taken a lot of time and energy on everyone’s part. I have appreciated the telephone calls, the variety of classes and I have been able to try some new classes and even some tasty recipes. I cannot imagine going through this time without the Y.”
