When Molly entered 7th grade, working out was not part of her regular routine. She had tried a few fun fitness classes here and there, but she never used equipment to exercise.

Then she joined the Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA’s 7th Grade Initiative — a free, year-long membership program offered to every 7th grader in our community.

“My mom told me about the Y’s 7th grade program and asked if I wanted to try it,” Molly said. “She said if I liked it, I could get a teen membership after the program ended. I decided to give it a shot.”

Funded entirely through charitable donations, the 7th Grade Initiative program gives teens a safe, welcoming space to learn how to use exercise equipment properly, build healthy habits and grow in confidence during a critical stage of development.

As part of the program, Molly completed four Teen Wellness classes where she learned how to safely use cardio and strength machines, understand wellness center etiquette and create a workout routine. Her instructor, Steve, taught the class in a way that was serious — but not too intimidating.

“It made it easier to learn the equipment the first time,” Molly shared.

After completing the teen wellness training, students earned the ability to use the Wellness Center on their own during designated teen hours. Molly enjoyed the freedom — working out on her own and alongside friends.

She didn’t stop there.

Molly also enrolled in Aquatics Conditioning, an advanced swim class focused on building endurance and refining stroke technique. What started as a free membership opportunity became a lifestyle shift.

Now in 8th grade, Molly comes to the Y at least three times a week after school and on weekends to continue her workout and swim routine.

“Coming to the Y helps clear my mind and keeps me grounded,” Molly says. Instead of wondering how to spend time after school, she has a productive, healthy outlet and a place where she feels comfortable and confident.

If another student were considering the program, Molly would tell them:
“Take it seriously. It’s not just a place to socialize — be your own person and do your own things.”

Why This Matters

Middle school is a pivotal time. It’s when lifelong habits begin to form.

Because of donor support, every 7th grader in our community can access the Y during this critical stage. There is no cost to participate. No barriers to entry. Just opportunity.

Your generosity makes it possible for teens in our community to:

  • Learn safe, responsible wellness practices
  • Build independence and confidence
  • Develop healthy coping strategies
  • Form positive peer connections
  • Establish habits that support lifelong well-being

The 7th Grade Initiative isn’t just about working out. It’s about creating a foundation for healthy living that lasts far beyond middle school.
