Keeping You Informed and Staying Connected
All of us at the Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA hope you are staying safe and healthy during this global health crisis.
FSPY has been closed since March 16, 2020 in response to NJ Executive Order No. 104.
As of now, during July and August 2020, we will be providing essential services such as camp and child care to help local families in need of a safe space for their children. Our Educational Child Care program reopened on July 1 and Summer Camp began on July 6.
We are thrilled to announce that our indoor pool will be reopening on Thursday, July 16 for lap swimming. This will be open to active, adult members ages 18 and over and reservations are required. You can learn more here.
We also are starting to offer 1:1 Personal Training and Nutrition Consultations, and outdoor group exercise classes to our active, full-facility members. You can read more about these here. At this time, we are still waiting on orders from the state on when we can open our Wellness Center.
We remain committed to serving you as best we can, providing new ways to help you stay connected, active, and healthy in spirit, mind and body, and supporting our community.
Please see below (or click each topic) for the latest information regarding:
We are now offering a variety of Healthy at Home workout and wellness resources for all ages, levels and interests.
Beginning July 13, our virtual classes will be available to active, full-facility members only. You can reactive your Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA membership here.
We’re continuing to check in on our members with phone calls, hosting virtual support groups and exploring new ways to bring our Y family together while staying apart.

Spring I Programs
Since Gov. Phil Murphy extended the public health emergency and we do not know when the state’s stay at home and executive orders will be lifted, we have made the decision to cancel the remaining classes from the Spring I session. If you or a family member were enrolled in a Spring I program, you may choose one of the following options for the remaining program fees for cancelled Spring I classes.
- You can convert the remaining fees into a tax-deductible donation to support the Y’s ongoing mission to serve our members and support our community during this crisis. Convert your program fees to a donation here.
- You can request a credit that can be applied toward future programs. Request a credit here.
- You can request a refund for your remaining program fees. Request a refund here.
Please note, most Spring I programs completed their second week of classes, while others only had one week. Your remaining fee will be adjusted to reflect the number of classes completed.
We will notify all members and program participants as we continue to reopen programs and services. If you do not currently receive emails from the Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA, please sign up here so you will receive the latest updates regarding the facility and programs.
2020 Summer Camp
We will be offering several of our camps this summer: Discovery, Explorer and Adventure. We have made the decision to cancel the following camps: Apple Seeds, Little Sprouts, Crossroads, Gymnastics, Dance, Cheer, Cook, Big Top Y, Splash and Sports Unlimited. It was a difficult decision, but due to new guidelines and capacity regarding the COVID-19 pandemic, we are working in the best interest of our campers, families and staff.
We currently have select spots available in our camp program for this summer. To learn more, click here.
We began summer camp on Monday, July 6, which would have been Week 2 of our camp season. If your child was enrolled in Week 1 of Camp, we will be placing a system credit on your Y account for the deposit fee.
Please note: We are continuing with our original camp payment schedule. You can view the schedule here. If your membership was on hold, it also will be re-activated starting July 1 and payment for July will be drafted on the 15th.
Our camp team has been working closely with experts in the camping field and Y-USA on ways to safely run camp this summer. Y-USA has been working with the American Camping Association and CDC and together they have hired Environmental Health and Engineering (EH&E), to work on safety procedures and protocols. Your child’s health and safety is our main priority.
For questions regarding the above information, please contact Katie Dudas at email@example.com or James McManus at firstname.lastname@example.org. Thank you for your patience as we work to respond to any questions or concerns you may have.
Preschool and School Age Child Care Programs
For Preschool Families Enrolled in the 2020-2021 School Year
For the 2020-2021 school year, we have decided to cancel our Toddler Plus and 3 Day 3s programs. It was a difficult decision, but due to new guidelines and capacity regarding the COVID-19 pandemic, we are working in the best interest of our students, families and staff. We will make a final decision regarding holding our Kindergarten Readiness Program by the end of July.
All families will receive a credit for their deposit for the 2020-2021 year. We appreciate your support and understanding throughout our closure. If you are interested in full-time Child Care for your child this Fall or have any questions regarding the cancellation, please contact Kathy Barros at email@example.com, as spots may become available.
For Preschool and SACC Families Currently Enrolled in the 2019-2020 School Year
All payments for Preschool and School Age Child Care have been suspended since April, 2020.
Since we were not able to continue Preschool or School Age Child Care this school year, you may choose one of the following options regarding your 2019-2020 deposit:
- You can convert your deposit to a tax-deductible donation to support the Y’s ongoing mission to serve our members and support our community during this crisis. Convert your deposit to a donation here.
- You can request a credit that can be applied to next year’s program fees. Request a credit here.
- You can request a refund for your program deposit. Request a refund here.

Full-time Educational Child Care Programs

Our Community Outreach
Our doors may be closed, but our Y is open for good.
In addition to helping our community stay strong, connected and active through virtual workouts and online health and wellness resources, we have focused our efforts to support our most vulnerable community members, healthcare workers and community partners.
- Staff are reaching out to members, including seniors, to check in on their well-being.
- We have continued to provide support and motivation through conference calls and live classes for our Diabetes, MS and LIVESTRONG(r) at the YMCA participants.
- The Y has donated personal protective equipment for first responders and coordinated with the Fanwood-Scotch Plains Rotary Club to distribute face masks to our members.
- We have established an Emergency Assistance Fund for FSPY team members who are most impacted by the Y’s closure and COVID-19.
- Partnering with the towns of Fanwood, Scotch Plains and the Rotary Club, we collected donations for Overlook Hospital and continue to collect non-perishable food items for the Immaculate Heart of Mary and the Fanwood Presbyterian Church food pantry.
- We are hosted a blood drive at our Y in partnership with the American Red Cross.
- We are continuing to explore ways to help meet community needs during this crisis.
How You Can Help
Stay With Us
Now more than ever, your membership means more. As a non-profit organization, the loss of membership and program fees will bring significant financial challenges to our organization. The FSPY Leadership Team and Board of Directors are working diligently to develop a plan to sustain the Y and still be here for our community when this crisis ends. This plan will need to rely on a commitment from our members.
If you are able, we ask that you STAY WITH US to invest in the future of the Y. Learn more about continuing your membership with the Y.
Make a Charitable Gift to Support the Y
Whenever there is either a significant financial or health crisis, charitable institutions like the Y are frequently the most vulnerable and may fail, closing their doors. We would hate to see what our community will look like without the Y, and we hope you feel the same.
When we emerge from this crisis it will be more important than ever that the Y is able to open our doors to the community and continue to offer life-changing programs and services that include child care, swim lessons, chronic disease prevention programs, active older adult exercise classes, camp and so much more.
Please consider making a tax-deductible donation to support the Y’s future. We have created a new campaign called “We are Y Strong” that will go toward supporting the Y’s services and operations through our closure and, including our new Emergency Assistance Fund for FSPY team members who are most impacted by the Y’s closure and COVID-19. You can make your donation at fspymca.org/giving and select the campaign “WeAreYStrong.”

Please do what you can to support our first responders, healthcare workers and essential businesses who continue to serve you. We encourage you to stay positive, optimistic and take care of yourselves in spirit, mind and body.
Thank you for being part of our Y family and for your ongoing support of our mission! We can’t wait to welcome you back through our doors when we reopen.
