Keeping You Informed and Staying Connected
All of us at the Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA hope you are staying safe and healthy during this global health crisis.
FSPY has been closed since March 16, 2020 in response to NJ Executive Order No. 104 and will remain closed until further notice.
During this time, we are committed to continue to serve you as best we can, providing new ways to help you stay connected, active, and healthy in spirit, mind and body, and supporting our community.
Please see below (or click each topic) for the latest information regarding:
We are now offering a variety of Healthy at Home workout and wellness resources for all ages, levels and interests.
We’re checking in on our members with phone calls, hosting virtual support groups and exploring new ways to bring our Y family together while staying apart.

Spring I Programs
Since Gov. Phil Murphy extended the public health emergency through at least June 6 and we do not know when the state’s stay at home and executive orders will be lifted, we have made the decision to cancel the remaining classes from the Spring I session. If you or a family member were enrolled in a Spring I program, you may choose one of the following options for the remaining program fees for cancelled Spring I classes.
- You can convert the remaining fees into a tax-deductible donation to support the Y’s ongoing mission to serve our members and support our community during this crisis. Convert your program fees to a donation here.
- You can request a credit that can be applied toward future programs. Request a credit here.
- You can request a refund for your remaining program fees. Request a refund here.
Please note, most Spring I programs completed their second week of classes, while others only had one week. Your remaining fee will be adjusted to reflect the number of classes completed.
We will notify all members and program participants when we have a date to reopen and a plan to resume programs. If you do not currently receive emails from the Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA, please sign up here so you will receive the latest updates regarding the facility and programs.
For now, we have a variety of fun family activities you and your kids can do at home and we are adding new content and videos daily. Please visit our Healthy at Home page and our Family at Home page, follow us on Facebook and sign up to receive our new Healthy at Home newsletter to see all we have to offer for the whole family.
2020 Summer Camp
At this time, we are still planning to offer several of our camps this summer: Discovery, Explorer and Adventure. We also have made the decision to cancel the following camps: Apple Seeds, Little Sprouts, Crossroads, Gymnastics, Dance, Cheer, Cook, Big Top Y, Splash and Sports Unlimited. It was a difficult decision, but due to new guidelines and capacity regarding the COVID-19 pandemic, we are working in the best interest of our campers, families and staff.
Our camp team has been working closely with experts in the camping field and Y-USA on ways to safely run camp this summer. Y-USA has been working with the American Camping Association and CDC and together they have hired Environmental Health and Engineering (EH&E), to work on safety procedures and protocols. Your child’s health and safety is our main priority.
Our intention right now is to move forward with our Discovery, Explorer and Adventure Camps with modifications to meet state health and safety regulations. However, we are still waiting on the go ahead to run any of our camps from the state and for the most up-to-date guidelines. We will be in further contact with camp families as more information is made available to us.
Read our latest camp update email here. The information provided is for those registered for Summer Camp 2020 and includes information on updated procedures and provides the option to opt-in or out of camp for this summer.
For questions regarding the above information, please contact James McManus at firstname.lastname@example.org or Kourtni Fortune at email@example.com. Thank you for your patience as we work to respond to any questions or concerns you may have.
Preschool and School Age Child Care Programs
For Families Currently Enrolled in the 2019-2020 School Year
All payments for Preschool and School Age Child Care have been suspended since April, 2020.
Gov. Phil Murphy announced on Monday, May 4 that all New Jersey schools will remain closed through the rest of the academic year, which means the Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA will not be able to resume Preschool or School Age Child Care before the end of the school year.
Since we are not able to continue Preschool or School Age Child Care this school year, you may choose one of the following options regarding your 2019-2020 deposit:
- You can convert your deposit to a tax-deductible donation to support the Y’s ongoing mission to serve our members and support our community during this crisis. Convert your deposit to a donation here.
- You can request a credit that can be applied to next year’s program fees. Request a credit here.
- You can request a refund for your program deposit. Request a refund here.

Full-time Educational Child Care Programs
All payments for full-time educational child care have been suspended since April, 2020. At this time, we know that we will not be offering child care in June. While we still do not know exactly when we will be able to offer full-time educational child care, we are actively working on plans to safely reopen our Y and child care programs. As soon as we are able, we look forward to providing a safe and supportive environment for our families and staff.
If your child is currently enrolled in our child care program, please read our latest email update here.
If we are able, we plan to host child care in July and August. In moving forward with our child care plans for this summer, we need to know by Friday, June 5, whether you plan to send your child to our program in July and August. Please complete this form by June 5 to let us know your decision.
If you choose to opt-out, you can also use this form to request a credit or refund for your deposit, but you must let us know by June 5. You can also choose to convert your deposit to a tax-deductible donation to support the Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA. Please fill out one form per child. As long as you do not cancel your YMCA membership, your decision to opt-out of child care for July and August will not impact your registration for the 2020-2021 school year.
Our Community Outreach
Our doors may be closed, but our Y is open for good.
In addition to helping our community stay strong, connected and active through virtual workouts and online health and wellness resources, we have focused our efforts to support our most vulnerable community members, healthcare workers and community partners.
- Staff are reaching out to members, including seniors, to check in on their well-being.
- We have continued to provide support and motivation through conference calls and live classes for our Diabetes, MS and LIVESTRONG(r) at the YMCA participants.
- The Y has donated personal protective equipment for first responders and coordinated with the Fanwood-Scotch Plains Rotary Club to distribute face masks to our members.
- We have established an Emergency Assistance Fund for FSPY team members who are most impacted by the Y’s closure and COVID-19.
- Partnering with the towns of Fanwood, Scotch Plains and the Rotary Club, we collected donations
- for Overlook Hospital and continue to collect non-perishable food items for the Immaculate Heart of Mary food pantry.
- We are hosting a blood drive at our Y on May 15th in partnership with the American Red Cross.
- We are continuing to explore ways to help meet community needs during this crisis.
How You Can Help
Stay With Us
Now more than ever, your membership means more. As a non-profit organization, the loss of membership and program fees will bring significant financial challenges to our organization. The FSPY Leadership Team and Board of Directors are working diligently to develop a plan to sustain the Y and still be here for our community when this crisis ends. This plan will need to rely on a commitment from our members.
If you are able, we ask that you STAY WITH US to invest in the future of the Y. Learn more about continuing your membership with the Y.
Make a Charitable Gift to Support the Y
Whenever there is either a significant financial or health crisis, charitable institutions like the Y are frequently the most vulnerable and may fail, closing their doors. We would hate to see what our community will look like without the Y, and we hope you feel the same.
When we emerge from this crisis it will be more important than ever that the Y is able to open our doors to the community and continue to offer life-changing programs and services that include child care, swim lessons, chronic disease prevention programs, active older adult exercise classes, camp and so much more.
Please consider making a tax-deductible donation to support the Y’s future. We have created a new campaign called “We are Y Strong” that will go toward supporting the Y’s services and operations through our closure and, including our new Emergency Assistance Fund for FSPY team members who are most impacted by the Y’s closure and COVID-19. You can make your donation at fspymca.org/giving and select the campaign “WeAreYStrong.”

Please do what you can to support our first responders, healthcare workers and essential businesses who continue to serve you. We encourage you to stay positive, optimistic and take care of yourselves in spirit, mind and body.
