The Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA is offering the 7th Grade Initiative Program, a free membership for 7th Graders who reside in Clark, Scotch Plains and Fanwood.

Program Goals
- Promote YMCA Character Values: Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility
- Increase physical and mental wellness, while having fun
- Develop and support healthy exercise and eating habits
- Establish a sense of belonging in each teen
- Provide a safe and secure atmosphere
Form Healthy Habits Early On
Seventh grade is a pivotal and transitional time for many teens. It is the time when teens are given freedom to choose how they spend their time. Habits that begin in the 7th grade are likely to continue into adulthood. The Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA wants to support and encourage kids to make good decisions and form habits that lead to a healthy lifestyle. The 7th Grade Initiative program provides teens with the opportunity to participate in fitness and sports, and to socialize with peers in a safe, supervised and conveniently-located environment.
Activities include:
- 7th grade members can participate in open gym, open swim and lap swim according to the published schedules available on our website and at our Welcome Center.
- Students can also participate in free fitness programs included with membership, such as Teen Wellness, Teen Cycle, Teen and Family Zumba and Family Yoga. Students can sign up for Teen Wellness and fitness classes on our Acuity Scheduling page available here and at our Welcome Center.
- Fee-based programming for teens include:
- Middle School Cross Country and Spring Track
- Gymnastics– classes and club
- Swim Lessons
- Volleyball Clinics
- Young Rembrandts (Ages 9-14)
- Intro to Acting (Ages 7-12)
- Let’s Cook (Ages 9-13)
- STEM 101 (Ages 8-12)

Donations to our annual support campaign help support the free 7th grade initiative. Please consider making a donation to help keep this vital program in our community.
It’s easy to activate your free 7th grade membership:
- Present your School ID, roster or report card in person at the Y. If your school is outside of Clark, Fanwood or Scotch Plains, please bring proof of residence.
- Student and parent/guardian must complete and sign a Membership Application in person at the Y.
- Student and parent must sign a Code of Conduct.
- Student will receive an ID card and begin their membership right away.
