The Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA is excited to bring back our American Red Cross Lifeguarding Certification and Recertification courses for individuals ages 15 and over. Our courses comply with social distancing practices and our updated health and safety procedures.
ABOUT THE COURSE
This course provides participants with the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies, as well as the knowledge to provide care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries and sudden illnesses until EMS personnel take over. Participants who successfully complete the lifeguarding certification and recertification courses will receive an American Red Cross certificate for Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED, valid for two years.
IN-PERSON AND ONLINE INSTRUCTION
Our classes are blended learning, with an 8-10 hour online portion directly through the Red Cross combined with hands-on training led by experienced instructors. A link to the online portion of the course and further information will be provided within 24 hours of registration. The online portion must be completed prior to the first in-person session. This course includes an in-person session for Bloodborne Pathogens and Administering Emergency Oxygen trainings. There will be an in-water pre-test exercise at the beginning of the first course session.
Students must come prepared in swimming gear to each class session. Space will be made available to dry off and change after any in-water sessions. Due to the nature of these courses, the in-water sessions will require close distances and direct contact between students, typically with face masks removed. Such contact will be minimized as much as possible, but students must be both aware of this and comfortable with close physical interactions with other students. Students experiencing any signs or symptoms of illness will be asked to stay home.
