Why is the Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA conducting a Capital Campaign?

This building project will give us the ability to meet the changing needs of our community. Our facility is at capacity with the programs and services we offer in our current building, yet the populations we serve continue to evolve. The communities of Fanwood, Scotch Plains and Clark are growing communities with many families moving into our towns, as well as an aging adult population. Steps need to be taken to provide the resources these individuals need now and into the future, whether it’s for childcare, family activities, health and well-being or social connectedness.

What new programs and services will the Y provide as a result of the project?

With two new studios, we will be able to expand our fitness and wellness offerings and chronic disease programs. The Wellness Center expansion will allow us to add more equipment and give members more space for cardio exercise, strength training and stretching. Our new outdoor campsite will give our day campers more outdoor space to run, play, explore and discover with designated playground areas, sports fields and nature trails. We will have more community space for members of all ages to re-connect, socialize and support one another in a welcoming and comfortable setting.

What is the difference between a Capital Campaign and the Y’s Annual Fundraising Campaign?

A Capital Campaign is a targeted fundraising effort designed to raise funds for a specific building project, such as renovating a facility. These dollars build buildings. The Y’s Annual Support Campaign raises funds to provide financial assistance scholarships to those who would otherwise not be able to participate in life-enhancing Y programs and services. These dollars support people. A successful Y needs generous donors for both Annual and Capital Campaigns.

What is the total cost of the project?

The project is estimated to be $9 million dollars. We are excited to share that we have some great momentum started and have already received some financial commitments toward the project. We are asking the community to help us raise $2 million to ensure we can complete our vision and continue to serve the community’s needs.

Who has oversight? How will they make sure the project comes in on budget?

Our Y’s volunteer Board of Trustees and Directors approved this capital project and will regularly monitor project expenses. The FSPY Building and Grounds Committee will closely monitor the project along with the Finance Committee, under the ultimate oversight of the FSPY CEO and Board of Directors.

How many people use the YMCA?

We offer programs for infants through seniors with a focus on youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. We currently serve 4,000 members from Scotch Plains, Fanwood, Clark and surrounding areas, with 500 members visiting our facility daily. We have 70 children enrolled in our full-day child care program and 250 children enrolled in our School Age Before and After Care program. Currently, we serve about 60 children at the Summer Day Camp located at our main Y building, and this project will allow us to serve up to 150 children at our main building each summer, in addition to the campers we serve at local schools.

How can I donate? How can I pay my gift or pledge?

The easiest way to contribute to the Capital Campaign is to donate online  or complete a pledge card and email to avardy@fspymca.org or bring it to our Welcome Center. Gifts and pledges can be paid by check, cash or credit card.

Can I make my gift over a period of time?

Absolutely. For many, a pledge is the preferred way to make a generous gift. It allows you to pay later or spread out your payments over multiple months or years, which may allow you to donate more than if you had to make your gift all at once. As the donor, you can specify the time period and payment schedule you wish.

Are donations to the capital campaign tax deductible?

Yes. The Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA is a charitable non-profit with 501(c)(3) designation by the IRS. Donors can feel secure if they choose to incorporate a gift with their tax planning goals. All donations will receive a letter documenting their contribution to the Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA.

Will donors be publicly acknowledged?

Yes, unless the donor chooses otherwise. Public acknowledgment is the choice of the donor. The YMCA has a planned donor recognition program, including attractive naming opportunities for spaces in the new campsite/renovated facility as well as a donor recognition in our building and on our website. However, we completely respect donor wishes and understand if public recognition is not desired. Gifts can remain anonymous if requested by the donor.

Can I specify how my gift will be used?

Yes. If a particular part of our project has special meaning to you, or you wish to commemorate a family member, you can specify your gift be recognized in that way. You can leave a lasting legacy and further our mission through the many naming opportunities we have. Please indicate your wishes on our campaign pledge card or contact Kim Decker, at 908.889.1999 or kdecker@fspymca.org for questions or more information.

What is the timeline for construction and completion?

We are currently in the early stages of the construction process, with interior construction starting in April 2022, and construction of our campsite starting in May 2022. Our goal is to have the interior renovations complete in 2023 and the campsite finalized and ready for use for our summer 2023 camp season.

How will the construction impact facility access or programs?

Our plan is to keep disruptions to the facility and programs as minimal as possible. We plan to complete the two new studios on the lower level before we start construction in the Wellness Center so we can have space to relocate equipment for member use. We also expect construction in the pool area to have very minimal impact. We will notify members in advance of any facility or schedule changes.
