This year, the Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA celebrates 75 years of strengthening community. As we reflect on the past and the impact we have had in the communities we serve, we are also planning our future. We are looking forward to serving our neighbors for another 75 years and beyond. That is why we are excited to launch our Capital Campaign, 75 and Beyond. Our goal is to raise $2 million to help fund a building expansion that will benefit the children and families in our community now and for generations.

This building project will give us the ability to meet the changing needs of our community. The last two years of the pandemic have shown that our community needs a place like the Y, and the need for more space has never been greater.  Our vision gives members of all ages the space to feel comfortable and safe – whether they are working out in our Wellness Center, taking a group exercise class, gathering in our community café, participating in summer camp or playing on our playgrounds.

You can help us reach our goal! Support the 75 and Beyond Capital Campaign

Giving Kids the Best Summer Ever

A New Summer Day Campsite

We are proud of our Y’s Summer Camp experience and our ability to give kids a fun-filled summer with the space we currently have. However, we can create an even better experience and serve even more families with a new outdoor campsite. We currently utilize a local school as well as designated sections of our parking lot and lawn for Summer Camp, but our campers need a permanent site with more green space and open fields.

We plan to create an outdoor campsite behind our building that will include a covered open-air pavilion, playground space, multipurpose court and an open playing field. It also will include two age-appropriate playgrounds for the children in our Child Care program. The new campsite will give us the permanent space we need to serve additional children in our community.

Making Health and Wellness A Priority

Wellness Center Expansion

Our plans include expanding our Wellness Center on the first floor and the second floor mezzanine, which will allow us to add more equipment. Right now, several of our strength machines are in our gym to give members more room to social distance while working out. This limits other programs – like gymnastics and basketball – that we can hold there. With our expanded Wellness Center, we can bring back all the equipment and add new equipment. We also will be able to utilize our gym for more programs, allowing us to offer more for our community.

Two New Fitness Studios

Did you know the Y has a lower level that we currently use for storage? It has the potential to be a great space for two new fitness studios for our group exercise classes, such as cycle and yoga. Our plan includes a lobby area outside the studios and bathroom facilities. The addition of the two studios will allow us to offer even more classes to our members, including seniors and our chronic disease program participants who will have elevator access.

Creating More Community Space

Welcome Center and Community Café Expansion

Our building project includes plans for an expanded lobby and Welcome Center creating a better flow for members checking in and out of the Y, and more space for our staff to assist members and guests with questions, transactions and registrations.

Our Community Café is the heart of our Y. It is where our members gather in the morning over a cup of coffee and where they catch up with each other after class. For many of our seniors, our café helps them stay connected to their friends and combat social isolation. Our plan is to increase our café space and add more tables and seating so Y members, staff and guests can have a more modern, comfortable, and welcoming area to connect, relax and recharge.

A Pool with a View

Expanding the Pool 2 deck and adding a second floor viewing area

If you’ve ever been to an FSPY Swim Team meet, then you know that space on the pool deck is limited. This building project gives us the opportunity to expand our first floor pool deck on Pool 2. This will include restrooms with exterior access for campsite use and an area for the Swim Team to conduct dryland drills. We also are excited to have the opportunity to add  2nd floor seating, giving our Swim Team families a designated area to watch swim meets.

75 and Beyond

We are excited to see what the next 75 years brings to our YMCA!

With this building project, we will be able to continue serving our community at the level it deserves for the next 75 years and beyond.

We are excited to start construction soon. More details about the project will be provided here and in member communications. To receive updates about the building project, please sign up for our newsletter here.
