Ages: 6 – 14

These lessons follow the YMCA of the USA Progressive Swim Lesson Program. There are six levels of progressively challenging YMCA swim classes covering all strokes, diving fundamentals and safety skills. Lessons are offered during the weekdays as well as the weekends.

 

POLLIWOG 1 – For the beginner who cannot swim independently.

POLLIWOG 2 – Prerequisite: Can paddle on front (with rotary breathing), side and back for 12 yards without flotation belt; is comfortable putting face in the water.

GUPPY – Prerequisite:  Can perform rudimentary front crawl for 25 yards using rhythmic breathing, as well as rudimentary back crawl for 25 yards without a flotation belt.

MINNOW – Prerequisite: Can perform freestyle, backstroke, and elementary backstroke for 25 yards without a flotation belt.  Note: Swimmer must have stamina to maintain 50 yards of continual swim,

FISH – Prerequisite: Can perform freestyle, backstroke, and elementary backstroke for 50 yards of continual swim as well as 25 yards of rudimentary breaststroke.

FLYING FISH – Prerequisite: Can perform freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, elementary backstroke, and sidestroke for 50 yards of continual swim.

SHARK – Prerequisite: Can perform freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, elementary backstroke, and sidestroke for 100 yards of continual swim as well as 25 yards of butterfly.

PIRANHA JR. (ages 6-8) – Swim Training program that focuses on all 4 competitive strokes.  Designed for the swimmer interested in improving technique and fitness without official competition.  Swimmers must be able to perform 50 yards of freestyle and backstroke and 25 yards of basic breaststroke.

PIRANHA(ages 9-14) – Swim Training program that focuses on all 4 competitive strokes. Designed for the swimmer interested in improving technique and fitness without official competition.  Swimmer must be able to swim 100 yards freestyle, backstroke and breaststroke and 25 yards of butterfly.  Director recommendation is required for this program.  (2 days per week minimum for participation)

LEARN TO DIVE (ages 5-10)- Basic and form based dives will be taught. This class is for the beginner level diver.  Participants must be at the Starfish/Guppy level and up.

 

ADAPTED SWIM LESSONS- CHILDREN WITH DISABILITIES

SPECIAL SWIMMERS I (ages 3-5)- This program is designed for swimmers who are classified as having special needs. A swim evaluation will take place on the first day to determine correct level placement.

SPECIAL SWIMMERS II (ages 6-10) –This program is designed for swimmers who are classified as having special needs. A swim evaluation will take place on the first day to determine correct level placement.
